
Panic Disorder (Repeated Panic attacks)
Panic Disorder is one of the common mental illnesses. Panic Disorder is characterized by sudden onset of palpitations, sweating, trembling/shaking, shortness of breath, nausea/abdominal distress, chest pain, choking sensations, dizziness, feelings of unreality, fear of dying, feelings of losing control, or feelings of going mad. Panic can be properly treated.
1. Recurrent attacks of severe anxiety assciated with palpitation(pounding heart beat), chest pain, choking sensation or suffocation, dizziness and feeling of unreality ( depersonalization or derealization).
2. There is also fear of dying, losing control or going mad.
3. The other associated features are trembling, excessive sweating, nausea or abdominal distress, chills or heat sensations and numbness/ tingling in body parts.
4. It comes suddenly in episodes & each episode may last from 10 min to 45 minutes. The affected person may feel like hell during episodes and fear that they might be getting HEART ATTACK but afterwards they start feeling completely normal.
5. Each episode of Panic attack increases the fear of another attack and the affected person starts living in constant fear.
6. Frequent and unpredictable panic attacks produce fear of going alone/staying alone anywhere.
7. Emergency visits to hospital and cardiology work up(ECG, Echo etc) along with multiple other investigations & consultations show that Everything is normal but the FEAR remains.
8. Understanding the illness is important to allay fear associated with it.
9. It Is a treatble condition.
10. Treatment includes medicines & Counselling sessions.
