Instead, DSM-5 has consolidated these categories into a single autism category like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).However, within the Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis, the DSM-5 mentions the severity levels and symptoms of dimensions.
These severity levels include:
Level 1: Requiring Support
Level 2: Requiring Substantial Support
Level 3: Requiring very substantial support
DSM-5 Autism Diagnostic Criteria
Here is the autism diagnostic criteria as defined by DSM-5
- Persistent Deficits in Social Communication and Social Interaction
- This might include social-emotional reciprocity deficit such as abnormal social approach and failure to do a normal conversation.
- Deficits in the nonverbal communicative behaviors used for social interaction like difficulty to comprehend or use gestures, or lacking facial expressions during conversations
- Difficulty in developing, maintaining and understanding relationships like finding it difficult to adjust the behavior to suit different contexts.
- Restricted, Repetitive Patterns of Behavior, or Interests
- Repetitive motor movements, or the use of objects or speech
- Showing inflexibility to stick to routines or behavioral patterns
- Highly fixated interests which are abnormal in nature like preoccupied with specific objects
- Hyper or hypo reactivity to sensory aspects within the environment like the pain, temperature, specific sounds, etc.
- Symptoms might not be present within the early development period but may not become completely manifested until the social demands surpass the limited capabilities.
- Symptoms cause clinically impairment in occupational, social, and similar important areas.
- These disturbances should not be explained via intellectual disability or global developmental delay. Intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder co-occur frequently to diagnose autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability.
Note: Individuals with an established DSM-IV diagnosis of autistic disorderAsperger’s disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise mentioned must be provided with autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. Individuals with difficulty in social communication but their symptoms do not meet the criteria for autism spectrum disorder must be evaluated for social (pragmatic) communication disorder.
